FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
We seem to have made it through February without any extreme weather which has been very good for the seedlings in the polly-tunnel. So far we have cauliflower, onions, beetroot, kale, sprouts and cabbage planted and we are starting to see some green shoots. We are also trying out some purple majesty potatoes this year. This is really the time of year when we start to see everything come alive again, this unfortunately includes the weeds!
Our calf count is now up to 7, all very healthy and often found wandering around the farm yard having discovered they can easily slip through the feeding grates. They are now all tagged and registered and weather permitting we can let them loose in the fields in the next month.
A couple of weeks ago we took part in the educational Food and Farming Day at the Caledonian Market in Stirling. Roanna took along a selection of our veggies and spent the day explaining what’s involved in working on a farm to local school children. The children especially enjoyed testing the different types of soil, and Roanna was very impressed with their questions which included ‘what time do the animals have to go to bed?’
We will be taking our vegetable box deliveries to the city of Glasgow from next week. The past few months have seen a drop in the number of customers locally; mostly due to the cutbacks and price increases everyone dealing with at the moment. We have had some enquiries from people living in the city centre who would love to have local traditionally grown vegetables.
After our newsletter last month we have had quite a few customers take up our offer of a 10% discount by paying for 6 months in advance. This offer is still open and can be started at any point so please get in touch if you are interested.
We are having another Open Day on the 23rd April; there will be more information about this as we get nearer to the day. This year we are holding a poster making competition, for children of primary school age, to create a poster that promotes buying local produced food. If you know of a group who would be interested in joining in then please contact Roanna for more information.
