Fresh Fruit and Vegetables
At yourlocalfarm we endeavour to grow as much of the vegetables that we supply as possible. We would aim to plant around 10 acres of vegetables ranging from potatoes and turnips to purple sprouting broccoli and kale. We also know have 200 sqaure feet of Poly-Tunnels which allows us to have salad crops earlier than normal, and some exotic produce, for example this year we are growing melons. We also have 2 small fruit tree orchards, a herb garden, asparagus bed and an area of rhubarb.
As a result of our unobtrusive and conservative farming and production methods we are pleased to have secured a membership to LEAF, (Linking Environment And Farming). This is an organisation specifically committed to viable agriculture which is environmentally and socially acceptable and ensures the continuity of supply of wholesome, affordable food while conserving and enhancing the fabric and wildlife of the countryside for future generations.
While we considered the certified organic route, this would have meant that all the other local growers (over 18 now) who supply us would also have to be registered and for some possibly just growing rhubarb or leeks in their garden this would have been impractical as the minimum cost of such registration is £400. For ourselves most of our crops would be organic, we use organic fertilisers, and minimal sprays.
Whilst we endeavour to grow sufficient produce ourselves we accept that this may not always be possible therefore that which we are unable to grow is sourced from other local farms and smallholdings. Similarly in respecting our customer’s requests and desires for a wide and varied selection of produce we will, when necessary, hand select quality produce from the “infamous” Glasgow Fruit Market for inclusion in our Vegetable Boxes.
Enquiries about the origin of any produce that we include in our Vegetable Box deliveries are always welcome.
