Livestock
Here at yourlocalfarm, Balquhatstone Mains Slamannan we have a range of livestock which are tended to and reared by Ian and Roanna.
A small herd of Highland cows, six in total, plus a larger herd of, fifteen, Aberdeen Angus cows make up our cattle herd.
We have fifty four sheep, mainly originating from Texel breeding as well as some Shetland ewes in our flock. This spring we birthed more than seventy five lambs, three of which we are still hand feeding.
Four pigs, two older and two piglets make sure we never have any left over fruit or vegetables going to waste and are most useful at digging over the soil in their outdoor pen.
This year we have decided to try something new and have added two veal calves to our livestock collection. We will be rearing them by hand, giving them milk and hard feed, until they are around six months old, by which time they will be ready to produce rose veal.
Free range eggs are produced daily by our hens. We have approximately one hundred and fifty hens in total who spend all day outdoors and are closed in at night, due to the ever present fear of hungry foxes. A neighbouring farm supplies us with fresh, free range duck eggs from their own flock.
As it is only our own animals we use to stock our Farm Shop we know our produce is fresh and wholesome meaning we have100% confidence in what we sell. We are in no doubt that all our animals enjoy a happy and stress free life and firmly believe these factors are reflected in the quality and tastes we are able to offer.
